It was previously suggested by medical professionals and
social workers to tour the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) sometime prior
to the birth of Baby Rhoads. We strongly
considered the suggestion and scheduled to meet with a patient host on the
floor; the day was today. Beginning on
the 3rd floor of the hospital where I work, we entered the elevator.
I humorously thought to myself, “Boy, who has an elevator to take them to their
future new born for midnight feedings; this will for sure beat stumbling up the
stairs any day!” Slowly ascending to the
floor, we were introduced to one of the kind-hearted hosts in the NICU. She first brought us in an area where we could
get away and relax, meet other families and receive counsel. As we made our way through the area, she
introduced us to “The Wall of Hope.” Explaining that each patient had a birth
picture and one that was up-to-date “graduating” the NICU at some point and now
are living full active lives. Evaluating
our situation, I had a thought of seeing the strength and hope of Baby Rhoads being
displayed on that wall someday.
We made our way through the actual ICU area where our future
residence will be, it started to become more of an unusual reality. The host, benevolent in her presence, introduced
us to one of the vacant rooms in the NICU where care will take place for our
future little one.
We are at 33 weeks and a few days, we will soon know when a
date will be set for the delivery of Baby Rhoads.
